Steve says: “We both took early retirement, sold our houses most of the contents, sold our cars, and decided to travel full time in an effort to reach all 4 corners of the globe, Nordkapp, Cape Town, Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia.<\/div>\r\n

We travelled for 10 months in our Landrover 130 Defender, it\u2019s an ex army battlefield ambulance which we have called Monty.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0<\/div>\r\n
We left the UK in July 2023 and returned in May 2024, we covered 50,000 kilometres (30,000 miles) across Europe and into Africa covering a total of 34 countries.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0<\/div>\r\n
We drove to the highest point on the European mainland to Nordkapp in Norway all the way to the Sahara Desert in Mauritania, then drove to Tunisia via Italy, driving to the border of Libya.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0<\/div>\r\n
We toured the UK on our return driving from Lands End to John o\u2019 Groats, we are coming to the show via the Lake District.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0<\/div>\r\n
We are now planning the second part of our journey and hopefully will be setting off in late 2024.”<\/div>\r\n

But then covid struck, it gave us our first challenge to live in a car park in old town Istanbul for 95 days during the first lockdown!! You would think we were the unluckiest newbie overland adventurers to have picked this date to start!! But we have created memories of adventure, laughter and a few tears, that will last forever.<\/div>\r\n

Our routes and plans had to be adapted to meet the new global and logistical challenges, to conform with the new rules and changes on some border crossings and shipping routes, but the lessons that we have learned and new memories made, this has ignited something, and we realise we have only just begun ……..<\/div>\r\n

In a fast-paced hour, Paul, a true circumnavigator of the globe (4 and a half years, 46 countries) will share a series of inspiring tales of adventure \u2013 linked by one theme. What it takes to face the inevitable setbacks, catastrophic events and keep on going!<\/em><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

In June 2010, when he set out to complete a True Circumnavigation of the Planet, Paul thought of it as an \u2018exciting expedition\u2019.\u00a0 But it quickly and unexpectedly morphed into an adventure that would shape his very identity, change his world view, and become the most formative and challenging endeavour of his life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Over four-and-a-half years and 70,000 miles there were certainly moments when it would have been sensible (and easy) to quit – running out of money, catastrophic breakdowns, totalling the vehicle in collision with a horse, sickness, border challenges, drug cartels, and a relationship that would not survive.\u00a0 But there were also thrills, heartwarming experiences, awe inspiring moments, and new lifelong friendships forged.\u00a0 And underneath it all, deep-down, Paul had something personal to resolve – a profound and powerful reason to find the strength, resilience, and determination to reach the goal \u2013 no matter what.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s rare that any Overland odyssey goes to plan.\u00a0 When you are broken down, your heart is beating with fear, or you are thousands of miles from home with no access to money, it doesn\u2019t feel like this is what you travel for.\u00a0 But these moments forge you into a seasoned Overlander and a stronger person.\u00a0 They equip you for your next trial \u2013 from wherever it arises.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Paul has always been drawn to adventure and exploration, and over the years he\u2019s tried <\/span>his hand at ocean sailing, gliding, mountaineering, and remote area travel.\u00a0 He is a natural storyteller, a professional speaker, and a very experienced Overlander, with over 100,000 miles of vehicle dependent overland travel on five continents.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

His most ambitious endeavour, a challenging four-and-a-half-year true circumnavigation of the world through 46 countries, connecting two antipodes precisely opposite each other on the surface of the planet – one in northeastern Mongolia, and the other in the far south of Chile, during which he crossed eight of the world\u2019s major deserts and became a bit of an expert at self-recovery and bush mechanics!<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n

In the autumn of 2022, Alan returned to northern Pakistan, his favourite travel destination, and drove for six weeks, off road, along rough jeep tracks, through some of the tallest and wildest mountains on earth – the western Himalayas, the Karakorum and the Hindu Kush. While revisiting some cherished old haunts, he also discovered other new, infrequently visited corners, hidden deep within this fabulous landscape, as he reached out towards the remote borders of Afghanistan and China.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0<\/div>\r\n
In his talk Alan relives his adventures, some old and some new. He relates his encounters with tribal groups whose home is within the territory\u2019s hidden high valleys, from the Pushtuns of Peshawar to the Kafirs of Kalash, and from the Afridis of the Kyber to the Ismailis of forgotten Shimshal, while also recalling the times he spent drinking tea with refugee Mujahideen fighters on the outskirts of Chitral. All this while he kept an ear close to the ground, listening intently for any lingering echoes of Kipling’s imperial Great Game, particularly clues appertaining to the unsolved murder of British explorer, George Jonas Whittaker Hayward, which he has been researching for almost 40 years.<\/div>\r\n
\u00a0<\/div>\r\n
Alan is founder and director of his own company, Yak Travel \u2013 <\/span>www.yaktravel.co.uk<\/a>. \u2013 which specialises in both gentle holidays and not so gentle expeditions to Pakistan, North East India, Bhutan, Nepal and Morocco. He is a regular speaker at travel shows and travel clubs, both at home and abroad, and is a respected travel writer, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\r\n

The OAC Overland Adventure Club (Land Rover Club)<\/span><\/a> was founded in 2006 at a campsite in Bala, Wales, by a group of friends from all over the UK, who had got to know one another on the LRO International magazine reader\u2019s forum.<\/em><\/p>\r\n

The Club is a very friendly and relaxed not-for-profit organisation which focuses on UK greenlane events, plus overseas overland expeditions including European and North African destinations – France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Romania and Morocco.<\/em><\/p>\r\n

In the autumn of 2022, with political stability having finally been restored to the region, Alan once more returned to northern Pakistan – for the fourth time – after an absence of 24 years and some 35 years after his first visit in 1987.<\/i><\/div>\r\n

On this latest trip, he drove for six weeks, off road, along rough jeep tracks, through some of the tallest and wildest mountains on earth – the western Himalayas, the Karakorum and the Hindu Kush. While revisiting some cherished old haunts, he also discovered other new, infrequently visited corners, hidden deep within this fabulous landscape, as he reached out towards the remote borders of Afghanistan and China.<\/i><\/p>\r\n

In his talk Alan relives his adventures, some old and some new. He relates his encounters with tribal groups whose home is within the territory\u2019s hidden high valleys, from the Pushtuns of Peshawar to the Kafirs of Kalash, and from the Afridis of the Kyber to the Ismailis of forgotten Shimshal, while also recalling the times he spent drinking tea with refugee Mujahideen fighters on the outskirts of Chitral. All this while he kept an ear close to the ground, listening intently for any lingering echoes of Kipling’s imperial Great Game, particularly clues appertaining to the unsolved murder of British explorer, George Jonas Whittaker Hayward, which he has been researching for almost 40 years.<\/i><\/p>\r\n

They battled the elements, all of which seemed to conspire against them. Now a regular explorer of the jungle-clad region himself, he has found that both traditional inter-tribal headhunting and nineteenth century colonial conflicts, as well as the British – Japanese battlegrounds of World War Two, all remain very close to the surface today.\"\"<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n

Back in 2017 Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkes set off trying to circumnavigate the globe on a scooter and sidecar. The pair had only passed their motorcycle tests 6 months before and had barely done 100 miles on their scooter and sidecar! With zero mechanical expertise and a reputation for poor planning and stupidity, the first chapter of the journey would see them thrown in at the deep end as they set off to drive from London, across Europe, down the length of Africa to Cape Town, all on\/in the very same scooter and sidecar. Many people who waved them off at the Ace Cafe on October 21st 2017 predicted they wouldn\u2019t even make it to Paris. Were they right? Find out in this talk!\"\"<\/p>\r\n

Matt and Reece hold the extremely niche Guinness World Record for the longest journey by scooter and sidecar. From 2017-2019 the pair became the first people ever to circumnavigate the globe by scooter and sidecar and are now often referred to as The Sidecar Guys.<\/p>\r\n

The pair travelled 34,000 miles through 35 countries, crossing 5 continents. The biggest challenges on their trip were scooting through the Sahara, climbing the dizzy heights of the Andes and a Siberian winter that saw temperatures drop to below -40\u02daC.

Since then, the pair have released a book about the adventure called Our Ridiculous World (Trip)<\/em> and have also founded \u201cThe Armchair Adventure Festival\u201d. The festival was launched back in April 2020 as the first ever completely live virtual adventure festival. In 2012 Neil and Pat quit their Jobs and set off on a new life. The dream was to travel the world in an overland truck. A bare chassis was sourced in and the truck build began in Germany and was completed in the UK.<\/p>\r\n

In 2017 the vehicle was shipped to Uruguay and they set off south towards Tierra del Fuego.<\/p>\r\n

The High Atlas Mountains, the tallest in all North Africa, include more than 400 peaks above 3000m, often only approachable in a 4\u00d74. \u00a0Alan has been visiting them for over 30 years. In this talk he describes the popular ascent to their very highest point, Jbel Toubkal (4167m), and to the summit of the glacier-carved massif of Ighil Mgoun (4068m). His tour, however, also extends to rarely frequented stretches of the Western High Atlas Mountains, as well as to the more southerly, desolate Anti-Atlas Mountains, dominated by the impressive volcanic plug of Jbel Sirwa (3305m) and the magnificent wilderness of Jbel Sahro.\"\"<\/p>\r\n

Alan first visited Morocco during the death-throes of the \u2018hippy era\u2019 towards the end of the 1970s and has since returned, perhaps 40 times, leading 4\u00d74 tours around the country and trekking extensively through both the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains. It is also about the Spanish character and culture, and how to make the most of interactions with this generous nation.<\/p>\r\n

Also covered are some of the more important legal and road safety issues, with a dash of ornithology and history thrown in for good measure.<\/p>\r\n

If you\u2019ve already explored the old favourites either independently or part of a 4\u00d74 tour (very often the Pyrenees as a first excursion followed by \u00a0Portugal or Spain, then as confidence grows, more challenging terrain like Morocco), the lands of Eastern Europe and beyond provide a fascinating destination \u2013 and one which is much easier to access than you might assume.<\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s human nature that we crave more adventurous destinations, so Polish-born Marcin is the man to set you on the right road \u2026 or track! Their planned 27,000 mile route from just 700 miles from the North Pole to Tierra del Fuego at the southernmost tip of South America crossed 25 countries on 3 continents, and took in everything from the High Arctic to the Peruvian Altoplano \u2026 to the deserts of the American west \u2026 to the endless gravel tracks of Patagonia. Coping with temperatures of over 50\u00b0C and altitudes of almost 5,000m above sea level, it pushed their trusty steed to the limit.<\/p>\r\n

\"\"Veterans In Action (VIA) is a charity that helps veterans who have suffered the effects of war or who have found the transition to civilian life difficult.<\/p>\r\n

VIA take a non-therapy approach and instead use the outdoors, adventurous activities and expeditions to help veterans rebuild their confidence, self-esteem and self-belief.<\/p>\r\n

Over the last 9 years VIA have undertaken a series of walking expeditions covering 13,500 miles across the UK with over 500 veterans suffering from PTSD.<\/p>\r\n

In 2017 VIA started a new project called Veterans Expeditions Overland. The intention was to strip and build 1 x Land Rover Defender 110 and 3 x Land Rover Discovery 1\u2019s, preparing them to expedition standard.<\/p>\r\n

The finished vehicles were then used to undertake an overland expedition driving from the UK to Greece and back with a group of veterans suffering from PTSD. Unfortunately one vehicle took a 75m tumble down a mountain in Bosnia rolling 7 times. All occupants walking away unscathed, a testament to the team\u2019s mechanical skills! Having self-recovered back up the mountain post-event, the team repatriated the bruised and battered vehicle back to the UK and are now preparing to rebuild it.<\/p>\r\n

Ben has been undertaking overland journeys for over a decade now. His vehicle-based travels have so far covered around 90,000 miles in about 80 different countries, always in a relatively ill-advised 2wd steed.<\/p>\r\n

Particular highlights of his travels so far include the subject of his talk \u2013 England to South Africa via the likes of Syria, Egypt and The Sudan in a classic Porsche, a mere 13,500 miles crossing 26 countries \u2026 \u2026 driving a Bajaj Auto-rickshaw TukTuk 2,000 miles across India and Nepal, from Calcutta to near the Kashmir border \u2026 a 14,000 mile blast from England to Singapore via Vietnam and Cambodia with a 1990 V8 Chevrolet Corvette and \u201978 Rolls Royce \u2026<\/p>\r\n

cycling\u00a0across Iceland\u2019s barren interior \u2026 several miles off the coast of Estonia, driving on the frozen Baltic Sea in a Jaguar XJ6 \u2026 heading\u00a0over the High Atlas Mountains to the Moroccan Sahara in a classic Rover P6 \u2026 tackling the 2006 Mongol Rally in an\u00a0Austin Mini \u2026 emulating Top Gear by riding the length of Vietnam on a decrepit 110cc Honda \u2026 a crazy jaunt through Arctic winter blizzards in a little Fiat 126 \u2026 and just last year he completed a 27,000 mile journey across 25 countries, from the northernmost bar on the planet to the southernmost, at the wheel of a TVR Chimaera sports car.<\/p>\r\n

They arrived back in to the UK in January 2019 as the first people to ever circumnavigate the globe on a scooter with a sidecar having travelled through 35 countries in 15 months on the road.<\/p>\r\n

The final part of their journey saw them drive 10,000km\u2019s back from Vladivostok, Russia in winter!<\/p>\r\n

The lads faced driving temperatures as low as -40C and they certainly got the charity challenge they were after \u2013 their journey raised money and awareness for the fight against modern slavery.<\/p>\r\n

Long dismissed by those looking to see all the better known Moroccan attractions, the vast interior of the Rekkam often remains unexplored.<\/p>\r\n
